Role of Indian Diaspora in Indias Foreign Policy, National Security and Economic Development

Ranchi, Dec 3: The Centre for International Relations of Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ ) today organised a distinguished lecture on Role of Indian Diaspora in Indias Foreign Policy, National Security and Economic Development.

Former Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs also former member secretary, High level Committee on Indian Diaspora, Mr J C Sharma, IFS (Retd) delivering the key note speech on the topic brought home the point that keeping in view the current trend, academic curriculum should stress on economic trade content.

 

The universities or colleges offering the course need to focus on job opportunity while framing the syllabus, Mr Sharma said adding the presence of overseas Indians has major implications for Indias foreign policy and economic development.

Referring to spurt in international terrorism and ethnic clashes across the globe, he said the diaspora, which has assumed a larger significance in recent past, determine foreign policies of nations concerned.

Consequently, the Indian diaspora too impacts Indias security, the former ambassador said.

Presence of diaspora creates linkages between internal political development and external relations. Global reach of media and revolutionary changes in the communication have helped create diaspora networks and instant connectivity with motherland.

It is therefore important to constantly engage diaspora and develop policies suited to each segment according to its characteristics, he said.

In His welcome speech, Vice Chancellor of CUJ Prof Darlando T Khathing said the topic taken up for this special lecture would throw an analytical insight into the concept of diaspora encompassing in particular NRI, Person of Indian Origin (PIO) and Stateless Person of Indian Origin (SPIO).

Prof Khathing expressed gratitude to the former ambassador for having visited the varsity campus at Brambe and shared his vast experience with the faculty and students.
