Ranchi, Mar 26: A round table conference on Naxalism, Development and Crisis of Governance in the context of Jharkhand was held at Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) today.

Several prominent speakers including former Jharkhand director general of police R R Prasad, Dr Ajay Sahni, Institute of Conflict Management, New Delhi, Dr N Manoharan, National Maritime Foundation, New Delhi, Mr Gladson Dungdung spoke on the inaugural session of the day-long programme organized by the Centre for Human Rights and Conflict Management, CUJ.

In his inaugural address, CUJ vice chancellor Prof A N Mishhra said he had seen the naxalite movement since childhood and stressed the need of “knowing” the genesis of the problem.

Prof Mishra hoped that spread of education and social justice could play a vital role in addressing the problem.

 

Dean (academic) Prof A Datta referred to his experience in particular 1970s and 1980s. “Durin g that period I came across many a youth having bright ideas”, Prof Datta said adding the sad part is that the problem still persists.

Others who gave a brief view on the issue were Dr Sahni and Mr Dungdung.

The conference had four sessions on topics like “1st session: Is the Maoist Movement Critical?”, “2nd session: Dynamics and drivers”, “3rh session:The State as Problem and Solution” and “4th session: Can the Future be Better?”.

The sessions sought to assess the various dimensions of state policy and strategy and examine the measures in which these have succeeded or failed.

The round was intended to provide a platform for the widest range of opinion, ideologies and actors in a constructive exchange of ideas, in an effort to bring clarity to the often polarized discourse on the subject of the Maoist movement in Jharkhand, Head of the centre Dr Saurabh said.

Registrar Prof R K Dey, controller of exam Dr  J N Nayak, senior faculty members, administrative staff andf students took part in the round table conference.
